On May 25 and 26, 2026, the Faculty of Geography and History at the University of Valencia will host the international colloquium “Professional Groups and Authoritarian States in the Iberian Peninsula in the 20th Century: Transnational and Comparative Perspectives”, organized by members of the SP1 research group “Francoism and Nation: Transnational Perspectives.”
The main objective of this meeting is to create a space for reflection on the study of intellectual professions and their relationship with authoritarian states in the Iberian Peninsula during the 20th century. From a transnational perspective, the colloquium will analyze the dynamics of transformation of different professional groups in the various Iberian dictatorial contexts, paying special attention to both synchronic phenomena and divergent logics between Spain and Portugal.
The workshop will bring together specialists from national and international universities and academic institutions, including the Casa de Velázquez, the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the Université Paris Nanterre, the University of Oviedo, the University of Barcelona, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, among others.
The program will open on Monday, May 25, with a session dedicated to research on professional groups and dictatorship at Valencian universities, featuring presentations by Ignacio Suay, Enric Novella, Julián Sanz, and Óscar Martín García. Later, a panel discussion will be held focusing on the comparative historiography of intellectual professions in Portugal and Spain during the 20th century, with the participation of researchers such as Lluís Coromina, Quintino Lopes, Sara Prades Plaza and Virginie Philippe. The day will conclude with a session dedicated to the “Maitron” project and biographical dictionaries of intellectual professions.
The second day, Tuesday, May 26, will focus on the current landscape of the sociology of professional groups in the Iberian Peninsula and a roundtable discussion on the semantic and terminological debates related to the historical study of these professional groups.
The sessions will take place in the Saló de Graus and the Sala Alfons Cucó of the Faculty of Geography and History at the University of Valencia (Avenida Blasco Ibáñez, 28, Valencia).
